Trip Overview

Chulu West peak is one of the popular trekking peaks in the Annapurna region. Chulu west peak, at a height of 6419m, is situated in a little valley, north of Manang. This is one of the peaks that can be seen from the Thorung la pass on the Annapurna Range. Travelers or mountaineers should have technical knowledge regarding mountaineering to climb Chulu west peak. The climb offers superb views of the Annapurna region, the beautiful landscape of Manang, and the local culture.

This trek is strenuous, a huge appetite for adventure, and the willingness to walk 8 to 9 hours a day, often at high altitude, is required. Good physical condition and a degree of good stamina are essential. A basic knowledge of mountain climbing is an advantage, although the experienced Sherpa guides will guide and accompany you to the top. The trip to the top is worth it as you get to experience excellent views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Tukuche peak,Nilgiri, Annapurna, and many more form the top of the Chulu west. There are no technical difficulties in ascending these peaks but the progress can be slow as the slopes are vulnerable to avalanches in certain conditions.

If you’re a mountaineering enthusiast who is not afraid to push your body to its limits, and has the physical and mental strength to do it, then this trek is ideal for you. The ascent can also be accompanied by trekking along the Annapurna range, into the Manang valley.

Day 27: Departure from Kathmandu
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
On your arrival at the Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu, our airport representatives will warmly greet you, after which you will be transferred to the hotel on a private tourist vehicle.

Day 2: Trip meeting followed by valley sightseeing
Early next morning following a hearty breakfast, Hike Himalaya Adventures will host a pre-trip meeting at the hotel you’re staying. During this meeting, we introduce your trip guide, and we’ll be happy to answer any question you may have. We provide you with important information about the trip, so do feel free to take notes if you want to. Also, please kindly bring three passport-size photos, passport and travel insurance policy. Legal formalities, including liability waiver, will be taken care of in this meeting.
Once the meeting concludes, we begin our sightseeing of the valley for which a private vehicle along with a professional guide will be provided. The valley is dotted with fantastic cultural heritages, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which we’ll visit. These include Boudhanath Stupa (the largest Buddhist shrines in the world), Pashupatinath (the holiest Hindu temple in the world), Durbar Squares (Palaces and fortresses of medieval Kings), along with other popular cultural attractions. The lifestyle of the Nepalese people, holy sadhus and monks, the fascinating history and the awe-inspiring architecture will be the highlight of this day-long sightseeing trip.

Day 3: Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar
Our staff will greet you a warm morning at your hotel and transfer you to Besisahar on 7 hours of drive. We’ll reach Besisahar in later afternoon. This is the starting point of our Annapurna Circuit trek. After some rest and exploration, we prepare our gear and equipment for exciting trekking days ahead.

Day 4: Trek from Besisahar to Bahundanda
This is the first trekking day of the trip. Our first destination is Bahundanda, which is reached after a 5-hour trek. Passing Gurung villages, most notably Khudi, we take uphill trails which give us great glimpses of Himalchuli and other adjacent peaks. We ascend to Bhulbhule, Ngadi and Lampata before finally reaching Bahundanda, which lies at an altitude of 1,310 meters above sea level.

Day 5: Trek from Bahundanda to Chamje
Though the track descends steeply at first to Syange, it starts to climb again after crossing a suspension bridge over Marshyandi River. En route, we cross Jagat, which is a famous village where you can see a lot of stone architecture.

Day 6: Trek from Chamje to Bagarchhap
On this day, we follow the Marshyandi River and reach the ancient village of Tal, our first major checkpoint on this stretch. Walking across small rolling hills, we reach Dharapani village with small Buddhist monuments. As we near Bagarchhap, the prominent Tibetan architecture and lifestyle will become an increasingly common sight. Tibetans settled in this region generations ago.

Day 7: Trek from Bagarchhap to Chame
Trekking through forests and small valleys, we ascend along the trails once we leave Bahundanda. Tyanja is our first checkpoint on this trekking day, which will last approximately 5 hours at a comfortable pace. Our destination of the day, Chame, is the district capital of Manang and you can admire the wonderful views of Annapurna peaks.

Day 8: Trek from Chame to Pisang
The increase in the altitude really starts to be felt now. With trails that run through forests and narrow valleys, we cross several suspension bridges, small and big, with enormous massif welcoming us in the heart of the Annapurna region. Pisang stands just under 3,500 meters above sea level.

Day 9: Trek from Pisang to Manang
Manang, the ancient and mystifying village, is our destination on this day. It takes around 6 hours to get to Manang from Pisang. Along the way, we reach a fork and have two options to get to Mungji – a steeper one with a stunning view or a flatter one. Your guide will help you choose either one. We finally reach Manang, where the culture and lifestyle of the people are very intriguing, so we’ll spend some time exploring the region.

Day 10: Acclimatization day at Manang village
At 3,500m, Manang will be our rest and acclimatization day. The air starts to get thinner at this point, so we let our bodies adjust to this change. We’ll spend the day exploring the village some more.

Day 11: Trek from Manang village to Yak Kharka
There is some ascent today as the trail climbs to Yak Kharka. As we leave Marshyangdi Valley, we reach Yak Kharka following the trails leading to Jarsang Khola Valley. The settlements are sparser in this region.

Day 12: Trek to Chulu West High Camp
It takes about three hours to reach Chulu West High Camp, and it is a steep climb throughout. Along the route, you will be able to see great views of the Annapurna range and of course, Chulu West.

Day 13: Climb Camp

Day 14: Climb Chulu West, and return back to camp

Day 15: Trek to Chulu Letdar
It takes another four hours to reach Chulu Letdar as we descend all the way down. Again, fantastic glimpses of Annapurna and Chulu follow us.

Day 16: Trek to Thorong High Camp

Thorong High Camp is located 4,800 meters above sea level, and takes about four hours to reach from Chulu Letdar. The trek takes place on rocky trails which have slightly inclining path. Towards, the end, the climb is fairly steeper.

Day 17: Trek to Muktinath
Our destination for the day is Muktinath at 3,850 meters in altitude. We set off very early in the morning to dodge the high winds of Thorung La Pass (a landmark pass that is situated 5,416 meters above sea level.) The trail is well trodden for hundreds of years and the pass itself is decorated nicely with prayer flags. You get amazing views of the mountains on the horizon. From Thorung La, it’s a really steep downhill trail and lose over 1,600 meters in altitude. As the trails become flatter, we reach grassy land and then traversing Jhon Khola valley, we reach Muktinath, the temple of soul liberation.

Day 18: Trek from Muktinath to Marpha
We start to descend from Muktinath, through Kali Gandaki valley, eventually reaching Marpha. At Marpha, don’t forget to enjoy the lovely Apple Brandy, branded as Marpha Brandy, which the village is nationally renowned for. After days of climbs, today and the days that follow are much easier as it is mostly descents.

Day 19: Trek from Marpha to Ghasa
The trails continue to drop to Ghasa, which is reaching trekking along the trails running parallel to the Kali Gandaki River.

Day 20: Trek from Ghasa to Tatopani
Kochepani, arguably the deepest gorge in the world, is en route our trails today as we trek from Ghasa to Tatopani. This is a fabled place to relax your mind and body. Tatopani translates to “hot water” and rightly so – the hot springs at Tatopani are quite a treat.

Day 21: Rest day at Tatopani
We continue our relaxing time at the hot springs of Tatopani.

Day 22: Trek from Tatopani to Ghorepani
We leave early in the morning and the trek today lasts till later afternoon as we ascend to Ghorepani, gaining almost 1,600 meters. The relaxation from the previous day at Tatopani should be able to replenish our energy for this trekking, during which we’ll pass several Gurung villages.

Day 23: Hike to Poon Hill. Trek from Ghorepani to Tikhedhunga
To see the simply jawdropping sunrise from Poon Hill, we hike to the hilltop very early in the morning. At 3,210m, mountains ahead seem just a stone’s throw away and they radiate into blushing red and then orange as the first beams of sun hits the white snow-capped Annapurnas. After watching the sunrise, we head back to the guesthouse from where we trek to Tikhedhnga.

Day 24: Trek from Tikhedhunga to Nayapul. Drive to Pokhara
Trekking along downward trails takes us to Birethani. Really pleasant, the trek lasts for about 3 hours before we reach Nayapul. From here we drive back to Pokhara.

Day 25: Pokhara sightseeing
The sightseeing of the city will start in the morning. A professional tour guide and a private vehicle are provided for this session, which will take us to the famed Fewa and Begnas Lakes, museums, Tibetan refugee settlement, Gupteshwar cave and Davis Waterfall. All in all, the day will be eventful as well as relaxing.

Day 26: Drive back to Kathmandu, and farewell dinner
We drive back to Kathmandu from Pokhara by bus. Leisure activities like souvenir shopping, spa and more exploration of the city can be done in late afternoon. You may also wish to extend your trip to include bungee jumping, rafting, Everest mountain flight and so forth. Later in the evening, you will be invited for a farewell dinner at a typical Nepalese restaurant, which will host cultural shows.

Day 27: Departure from Kathmandu
This is the last day of the trip. You will be transferred to the airport and we wish you safe journey back home.
