Day 01 - Arrival at Paro Airport
After a magnificent flight in Druk Air, Bhutan’s national carrier, you arrive at Paro Airport, the only international airport in Bhutan. We take some time exploring the markets in Paro.
Day 02 - Sightseeing around Paro
After breakfast we head to Ta Dzong, which houses the National Museum and then we visit RimpungDzong in Paro. There is a cantilever bridge that we’ll cross – it was built almost 500 years ago and is located 18 kms from Paro. The fortress at Paro is quite a remarkable monument. We will explore the fortress and on a clear day we can also see Mount Chomolhari from here. We’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore and learn about the traditional Bhutanese lifestyle.
Day 03 - Scenic drive from Paro to Thimphu for sightseeing
From Paro we take a one-hour drive to Thimpu, where we spend the day sightseeing. Some of the places we visit include the National Memorial Chorten, National Library and the Takin Reserve. The taste of Bhutan and its culture take you to another world altogether. After a hearty lunch, we drop by the Arts and Crafts School, the Textile Museum, the House of Incense and House of paper. We get to observe the lifestyle of the Bhutanese people as well.
Day 04 - Drive from Thimphu to Punakha with sightseeing on the way
After driving for 3 hours on steeply climbing roads through pine forests, we get to Dochula Pass which has stunning views of the mountains in the Himalayas. There are several species of trees along with flora and fauna. These include rare species of birds and animals. Next we head to Lobsea and hike to ChimiLhakhang Temple, which is believed to bless women with fertility. We then go to PunakhaDzong in the north. Built in 1637, the Dzong is located strategically between Rivers Pochu and Mochu. We ride back to Thimpu in the evening.
Day 05 - Drive from Punakha to Trongsa
We ride to Tongsa via Pele La Pass, which has a chorten festooned in prayer flags. The change in terrain is very marked as we gain higher altitude. As we approach Trongsa, we can view the stunning TrongsaDzong farther afield.We then pay a visit to ChendebjiChorten, which has eyes painted at four points.The structure was built in the 18th century by Lama Shida from Tibet. We stop here for lunch. In the late afternoon, we reach Trongsa.
Day 06 - Drive from Trongsa to Bumthang
Located about 70 kms from Trongsa, Bhumthang is a three-hour drive. The roads are wider here and then it passes through coniferous forest into Chumey valley. Bhumthang is known for its vibrant fabric which is created through traditional processes and techniques. We ride to the center of the valley, i.e. Bhumthang.
Day 07 - Sightseeing around Bumthang
Made up of four valleys, namely Tang, Chumey, Choekhor and Ura, Bhumtang houses many a holy Buddhist temples and monasteries. We’ll visit JakarDzong (built in the 17th century), JambayLhakhang (built in the 7th century by the Tibetan king SongsenGampo), Tamshing (16th century) and other popular monasteries. We’ll stop by traditional farms for rest and refreshments. There is also a Swiss farm which produces Swiss cheese along with other products like honey and juice. We’ll take smaller excursions to markets and other points of interest.
Day 08 –Drive from Bumthang to Phobjikha
Phobjikha is a glacial valley located about 7-hour drive away from Bhumthang. The renowned monastery of Gangtey is situated on the slopes of the valley. The main village of Phobjikha is situated on the valley bottom, a few kilometers from the monastery. The black necked cranes can be seen here during the season, because the village is their winter home and they migrate from the plains of Tibet in the north. The migration is celebrated in the valley as the black necked crane festival every November.
Day 09 - Drive from Phobjikha back to Paro
Today is a very relaxed and scenic drive from Phobjikha to Paro.
Day 10 - Excursion to the Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest)
Today we hike to Taktsang Monastery, which is arguably the most notable structure in Bhutan. We climb through a gorgeous pine and rhododendron forest along the trails to the Tiger’s Nest. We take a few stops for rest along the way, which give us amazing views of the surrounding as well. The monastery, built in the 17th century, is perched on a cliff wall with a 900m drop to the valley below. This monastery holds a special significance for Buddhists in Bhutan.
Day 11 - Transfer to the international airport for your final departure
After having breakfast, you will be transferred to Paro International Airport for your flight to onward destination.
