Day 01 - Arrival at Paro Airport
After a magnificent flight in Druk Air, Bhutan’s national carrier, you arrive at Paro Airport, the only international airport in Bhutan. We take some time exploring the markets in Paro.
Day 02 - Sightseeing around Paro
Today we hike to Taktsang Monastery, which is arguably the most notable structure in Bhutan. We climb through a gorgeous pine and rhododendron forest along the trails to the Tiger’s Nest. We take a few stops for rest along the way, which give us amazing views of the surrounding as well. Day 03 - Drive from Paro to Shana
First we drive up to Drukyel Dzong which is the starting point of our trek. We get wonderful views of Mt. Chomalhari. The first hour of the trek takes us through a wonderful fertile valley, then along the Paro Chu River. The first village we come across is Tsento Zampa, which is an old village where you can see people going about their daily traditional life. Walking on, we come across a military camp at Gunitsawa. After about 5 hours of trekking today, we reach our destination of Shana.
Day 04 - Trek to Thangthangka
We have almost 22 kilometers to cover today, which will take about 7 hours. We follow the river passing the Shana bridge. Then the trail climbs steeply into a forest of bamboo, oak and ferns. We cross a couple of smaller passes, including the forbidden pass of Tremo La. After crossing a bridge at 3,250m, the trail continues through the forest and slimbs to Seyende Zam, where there’s a huge chorten. We rest at Thangthangka.
Day 05 - Trek to Jangothang, also called Chomolhari Base Camp
With the view of Chomalhori, the trail today exits the forest and then reaches the valley of Tegethang, which is very commonly used by yak herdsmen. Our journey today continues till Jangothang, which is the Chomolhari Base Camp at the altitude of 4,044m. There are old ruins of fortresses that you can visit here.
Day 06 - Rest Day in Jangothang
The day is spent acclimatizing at Jangothang. Hiking is a popular activity there and there are many options for this, one of which is the trail to Tsho Phu. From here, you get fantastic view of Chomolhari and Jichu Drake mountains. You’ll also likely encounter a herd of Himalayan Blue Sheep in this area.
Day 07 - Trek to Lingshi
Today is a long day of trekking as we climb out of the valley to another climb and pass. The trail is windy at that altitude at Nyelela Pass, which is located at an altitude of 4,890m. From here, you will be able to see the regions that you’ll be trekking into in the following days. A little further, we stop for lunch. The trail continues to drop and passes a small gorge. Our campsite is next to the river.
Day 08 - Trek to Chebisa
Today is a lovely day of relaxed trek. When we leave Lingshi, we get to a village by the name of Gom Yu with a huge cliff on the side. We continue on to come across a massive waterfall at Chebisa village. This is also where we will camp, right next to the river.
Day 09 - Trek to Shakya Pasang
There is a climb at the start of the trail till Ggu La at 4,440m, then followed by a long descend. We climb over the ridge then descending on the path to the valley of Jholethang. There are light forests along the way. Crossing Chachim, a yak pasture, the trail travels through higher valley floors. We set our camp at the valley bottom.
Day 10 - Trek to Robluthang
Passing Jarela Pass, which is at the altitude of 4,785m, we get great view of the Himalayas. Then the trial descends to the trail of Tsarigathan valley. This is also the summer resting spot of rare Himalayan Takin – Bhutan’s national animal. After trekking for about 8 hours today, covering 16 kms, we reach our camping site at Robluthang.
Day 11 - Trek to Limithang
Also a long day today, we cross through another pass by the name of Shinchela at 5,000m above sea level. This is the highest pass on the trekking route. There are several exotic species of animals that can be seen here; these include blue Sheep, griffin vultures, eagles and so forth. Walking across a rugged rocky terrain, we reach a glacial valley. We’ll be camping along the river banks at Limithang.
Day 12 - Trek to Laya
We walk to Laya today on a pleasant trail that sports marvelous views. Along the river, which is one of the tributaries of Mochu, we pass through a forest filled with rare birds. After four hours of walking, we reach Laya village, which is located at a high altitude of 3,800m.
