Today we hike to Taktsang Monastery, which is arguably the most notable structure in Bhutan. We climb through a gorgeous pine and rhododendron forest along the trails to the Tiger’s Nest. We take a few stops for rest along the way, which give us amazing views of the surrounding as well. The monastery, built in the 17th century, is perched on a cliff wall with a 900m drop to the valley below. This monastery holds a special significance for Buddhists in Bhutan.
Day 03 - Drive from Paro to Shana
First we drive up to DrukyelDzong which is the starting point of our trek. We get wonderful views of Mt. Chomalhari. The first hour of the trek takes us through a wonderful fertile valley, then along the Paro Chu River. The first village we come across is TsentoZampa, which is an old village where you can see people going about their daily traditional life. Walking on, we come across a military camp at Gunitsawa. After about 5 hours of trekking today, we reach our destination of Shana.
Day 04 - Trek to Thangthangka
We have almost 22 kilometers to cover today, which will take about 7 hours. We follow the river passing the Shana bridge. Then the trail climbs steeply into a forest of bamboo, oak and ferns. We cross a couple of smaller passes, including the forbidden pass of Tremo La. After crossing a bridge at 3,250m, the trail continues through the forest and slimbs to SeyendeZam, where there’s a huge chorten. We rest at Thangthangka.
Day 05 - Trek to Jangothang, also called ChomolhariBase Camp
With the view of Chomalhori, the trail today exists the forest and then reaches the valley of Tegethang, which is very commonly used by yak herdsmen. Our journey today continues till Jangothang, which is the Chomolhari Base Camp at the altitude of 4,044m. There are old ruins of fortresses that you can visit here.
Day 06 - Rest day in Jangothang
The day is spent acclimatizing at Jangothang. Hiking is a popular activity there and there are many options for this, one of which is the trail to TshoPhu. From here, you get fantastic view of Chomolhari and Jichu Drake mountains. You’ll also likely encounter a herd of Himalayan Blue Sheep in this area.
Day 07 - Trek to Lingshi
Today is a long day of trekking as we climb out of the valley to another climb and pass. The trail is windy at that altitude at Nyelela Pass, which is located at an altitude of 4,890m. From here, you will be able to see the regions that you’ll be trekking into in the following days. A little further, we stop for lunch. The trails continue to drop and passes a small gorge. Our campsite is next to the river.
Day 08 - Trekking to Shodu
The trek today starts very early because this is another hard day with great passes. Passing through the forests, we walk towards a small chorten on the ridge. Look down below to see the No Chhu, or Blue River, and then climb to a higher altitude to cross the main river on the side of the valley. The climbs are mostly through switchbacks. We start to descend, and eventually reach JaradinthangChhu, which flows into the Thimpu River. Our camping site Shodu is along the river banks.
Day 09 - Trek to Barshong
Passing an abandoned military camp, we follow the trail to a river. There is a limestone valley where monks used to meditate. We then cross the main river that gives us great views of the rock façade and waterfalls. We climb to BarshongDzong which is known for its flora and fauna. You may choose to walk an hour or two to reach an even better campsite.
Day 10 - Trek to Dodina then transport to Thimphu
We then descend to the ThimpuChhu River. The terrain is rolling ups and downs to the point of DolamKencho at 3,290m. After ascending to another few hundred meters, the trail falls again reading Dodina, from where the trail goes through bamboo forest. We’ll have covered 22kms today in about 7 to 8 hours. Once the trek ends, a vehicle will be waiting for us that will transport us to Thimpu, which is the capital city of Bhutan.
Day 11 - Drive from Thimphu to Paro
After breakfast, we do some sightseeing in Thimpu. Some of the places we visit include the National Memorial Chorten, National Library and the Takin Reserve. The taste of Bhutan and its culture take you to another world altogether. After a hearty lunch, we drop by the Arts and Crafts School, the Textile Museum, the House of Incense and House of paper. As we drive from Thimpu, we stop at Ta Dzong on the way. The Dzong houses the National Museum and then we visit RimpungDzong in Paro. There is a cantilever bridge that we’ll cross – it was built almost 500 years ago and is located 18 kms from Paro. The fortress at Paro is quite a remarkable monument. We will explore the fortress and on a clear day we can also see Mount Chomolhari from here. We’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore and learn about the traditional Bhutanese lifestyle.
