Though Mardi Himal trek route is not explored as much the other trails in Annapurna region, this trail is equally amazing as the rest of the others. A long rising ridge and its summit that from the southwesterly lower slope of Mount Machhapuchhare is known as the Mardi Himal. Located in the east of the Modi Khola, across the valley from Hiunchuli, Mardi Himal calls out to all the people who want to experience the forest and wilderness zone of these mountains. Mardi Himal trekking, follows the least trodden trail away from the trekkers and therefore, you’ll be venturing into the unexplored. Ascending through the untouched oak and rhododendron forest you experience the dramatic scenery of sacred Mt. Machapuchare, Mardi Himal and Annapurnas up close and personal. The torquise glacier and the mirror like frozen lakes will greet us from time to time, however this type of trekking is mainly designed to venture into the forests and villages that have not felt the impact of tourism. Mountains like Mt. Dhauglagiri 8167m, Mt. Annapurna 8091m,Annapurna II 7937m, Annapurna III 7555m, Annapurna IV 7525m, Annapurna south 7219m Hiunchuli 6441m, Fish tail/Machhapuchhare 6988m etc can be seen through this whole trek.
Our journey starts from phokara, we walk to Suiket and from there we climb from Phedi steeply up to the main trail along the ridge to Dhampus. At the height of 1620m (5314 ft), in the first might of the camp we can see the full view of Machhappuchare.
Morning usually greets us with the sun illuminating its golden rays on the magnificient fishtail mountain. The journey to the "unknown" starts after we leave other tourists and trekkers behind and go to the less used trail of Mardi himal trek. Magical forests of birch, giant rhododendron, mountain oak, maple, and hemlock welcomes us with open arms. As we continue with our ascent, we walk into the classic cloud forest with mosses, tree ferns and orchids. At times, we can catch the thrilling view of Hiuchuli and Annapurna South. We take some time to acclimatize and then star our journey once again, the views leaves us spellbound. Annapurna South and Machapuchre seem so close that we are at times reminded of the glory of these mountains. At favorable conditions we reach up to 5,000m to 5,300m (16,400 ft to 17,400 ft) and attain our absolute goal, the crest of Mardi Himal. The huge Machhpuchare, looms in front of us and other beautiful mountains of the Himalayas are also right there, glistening in the sun. After days of walking, you’ll attain the divine bliss that will remain in your heart forever after.
Alternatively, this trek can also be commenced after about 40 minutes drive to Kande(1600meter) and then 3 hours trek to Deurali(2600m). From Deurali, Low camp is the ideal place in terms of the hours of walk. However, Low camp has only a couple of teahouses so it can be tricky to get the accommodation in the main season. From Low camp, one can make upto High Camp(3550metre) on the following day which is only about 3 to 4 hours for normal trekker.
High camp is only the place where a few teahouses are available. After one night spent in the High Camp, the following day we can make upto Mardi Himal Base Camp which is about 6-7 hours walk. Today is the most redawding day among all the days as you will be amazed with the grand view of Himchuli, Annapurnas, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchre etc.
The following day, you will descend down to Sidding or Lwang Village which is about 3-4 hours trek to the avarage trekker. After staying one night at Sidding or Lwang, we will get trek back to Pokhara. Some people also name it virgin trek in Nepal.
